Career Specialties

J Sumerau’s research and creative endeavors focus on Continuity and Change in Meaning Systems related to gender, sexualities, health, sports, aging, arts and violence.

Professional and Community Activities

Sumerau is the author of six non-fiction books including That’s What He Said: What Men Say About Gender and Society (with Giuseppina Holway); Transformations in Queer, Trans, and Intersex Health & Aging (with Alexandra C.H. Nowakowski and Nik M. Lampe); and Violent Manhood.

Sumerau is also the author of seven novels including the 2021 George Garrett Fiction Prize Winner Transmission,ÌýScarecrowÌýand Via Chicago.

They are also the author of over 100 shorter works in social and physical science, humanities, and popular journals, edited volumes, and magazines as well as the editor of three books, four social science journal special editions, and a book series focused on innovative research in gender and sexuality.

Sumerau also currently serves as the director of the applied sociology program.
